The most beautiful region on the Gold Coast is definitely the Gold Coast Hinterland. This region stretches from Mount Tambourine in the north, through to Mount Warning in the south and include places with special attractions and scenery. The mountain forests, streams, waterfalls, native vegetation, Gold Coast accommodation and wildlife come together to produce one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia.

Many tourists like to stay on the Gold Coast and visit the hinterland on a day tour or drive themselves for a day out and a family picnic. Others are attracted by the bush land atmosphere and come to stay for a week or more in one of the rainforest retreats or in one of the popular mountain lodges in the area. Access is from Coolangatta or the northern regions of the Gold Coast.

Mount Tambourine is special. This region is a popular day tour destination with lots of quaint villages filled with galleries, craft shops, cafes and restaurants. There are some magnificent forest areas that feature beautiful tall rose gums and stringybarks with palm and fern under stories. Fast flowing streams and waterfalls are also a feature of the area. In some areas there are high sandstone escarpments with battlements and ramparts and high waterfalls crashing over the edge. Further south around the Canungra area are extensive areas of dense rainforests and beautiful waterfalls. At the southern end of the Gold Coast hinterland is the forest region where you will find some beautiful resorts. O’Riellys Guesthouse and Binna Burra Mountain Lodge are two of the oldest and most famous and Pethers rainforest retreat is another and more in the luxury field. There are magnificent bushwalks in this region and spectacular views from the top of the escarpment over the Gold Coast coastal strip and on to the Pacific Ocean. Raised catwalks that give you access to the treetop canopy are also a feature in this area and the unique Australian wildlife is a common feature of the hinterland region.
